Advanced Cattle
Feeding
Superintendents: John Keeney, Kevin Putney, Duane Ohnemus, Rick Davitt
Advisory Committee: Warren County Cattlemen
The Advanced Cattle Feeding Project shall consist of at least three
animals owned by one or more 4-H members in the same family; or one or
more 4-H’ers in the same family may have a partnership project with each
4-H’er owning up to three animals in the project.
Each owner may designate one calf from the pen to be shown as an
individual in the Market Beef classes. The calf must be weighed and
tagged with both a tag designated for the pen project and the market
beef project, and the animal is to be fed with the other animals
in the pen project. All animals must be dehorned.
Each pen of Advanced Cattle Feeders must be fed separate from other
pens, individual market beeves or other livestock on the farm to be able
to exhibit at the County Fair. To be eligible for awards, all calves
enrolled in the project must be weighed in and exhibited at the County
Fair. Project members have complete rules for the project.
The pens will be divided by weight into approximately equal-sized
classes. They will be judged on the uniformity, finish and carcass
desirability.
In addition to the premiums for the “on-the-hoof” placing, members may
compete for the Advanced Cattle Feeding Proficiency Award which shall be
based on an Advisory Committee’s evaluation of management practices,
interviews, records, feed efficiency, rate of gain, etc. The minimum
weigh-in weight at the County Fair is an 850 lb. average for steers and
an 800 lb. average for heifers.
All livestock exhibitors (except horse exhibitors) are to wear a
collared, sleeved, tucked in shirt or an official 4-H/FFA t-shirt tucked
in, into the show ring.
