CLOTHING SELECTION - Division 161

4-H Clothing Selection is open to youth grades 4 -12, who have participated in a 4-H youth program - community club, urban, EFNEP, CRD or other special groups. The 4-H’ers in Clothing Selection do not have to have been enrolled in the clothing project. The outfit selected by the participant must be purchased.

4-H’ers should have had a county experience(s) in choosing shopping alternatives, evaluating design, fit, fabric quality, construction features, price and cost per wearing of clothing before making the decision to select and purchase the particular garment or outfit selected for the Clothing Selection event.

Clothing selected should represent one of the following three categories:
Casual Clothes: clothes for school or work. Work may range from professional to non-technical and service types. Restaurant, sales, hospital (receptionist, nurses’ aide), grocery store (from manager to stock person), house cleaning, secretary, 4-H volunteer, etc., are examples of types of clothes that might suggest casual clothes.

Sport or Functional Clothes: clothes that assist with a task or activity, protect you from the environment or promote safety. Clothing may be chosen for a particular sport. i.e. bicycling, temperature control situation, or for use in a specific hazardous situation, i.e. farming. This clothing may be selected to minimize environmental conditions or to help prevent accidental injury. Clothing to meet special needs of a handicapping condition fit under this category.
Special Occasion (Dressy) Clothes: clothing for special events (graduation, prom, wedding, etc.). Clothing is chosen to allow personal expression with some thought of future use.

New Category - $15 Challenge
All participants (male and Female) to qualify for participation:

A) Purchase an outfit that represents the 4-Her’s goal or intended use for the selected outfit..
B) Have had individual planned or county experiences in choosing shopping alternatives, evaluation fit, quality and construction features, price, and cost comparison.
C) Cost of outfit must be $15 or less, not including shoes, accessories, or under garments.

NOTE: Clothes may be purchased from any source, including consignment shops, used clothing stores, etc. Clothing items that are home sewn are not eligible unless the completed garment was purchased from a used clothing source. Clothing items which are custom sewn specifically for the participant are not eligible.

Entrant must submit a description sheet, which may be obtained from the Extension Office and brought on judging day.

The County Clothing Selection Contest will take place Thursday, June 19th, 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the Extension Office. Entries will be taken at the Extension Office until May 30th. Entrants will be expected to be dressed and ready to model their garments at a time to be announced.

One girl and one boy and one minority, who are in grades 9-12, may be selected for competition in the State Fair Clothing Selection program. A member may participate in the State Clothing Selection event only once. This year’s State Fair competition will be held on Friday, August 9th.

Ribbons will be given and State Fair winners will be announced at a program Sunday, July 27h, at the County Fair.
